Academic Vocabulary (a.m.)
This session will provide foundational signed vocabulary of Math, Science, History, and
Social Studies so that interpreters can provide a visual equivalent interpretation. Interpretation skills will incorporate the use of space, fingerspelling, classifiers and ASL syntax to make the context visually accessible for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students in classroom settings. Knowing when to fingerspell vs. using a sign for the terminology is crucial in interpreting in the educational setting. Attendees will participate and provide a visual equivalent interpretation given by Christopher
Personification (p.m.)
Transform yourself! In literature, the technique of “personification” gives inanimate objects, plants, and animals human-like characteristics. To add drama to your storytelling, you can use ASL techniques to “Become” various objects. Personification allows performers to “get inside” things and show—rather than tell—what’s going on. This session will allow attendees to practice personification while using classifiers as well as body language (not just the hands). Attendees will participate in group discussions that will challenge your thinking and answer questions presented by Christopher.
Originally from Michigan, Christopher Rawlings was born Deaf. He attended the Wisconsin School for the Deaf, RIT and is a graduate from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee with a degree in exceptional education. Christopher is currently working at the Wisconsin Educational Services program for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind Outreach as a Sign Communication Specialist. Christopher is an active participant within the Deaf community in Wisconsin. He also performs stand-up comedy, skits, and improvisation throughout the community. Christopher’s main goal is to make people laugh and feel good about themselves. During Christopher’s spare time he loves spending time with his wife, 2 daughters, and a son. So, watch out that Christopher is coming from Wisconsin!
As ASL interpreters, it may be beneficial to add this workshop "Academic Vocabulary" and "Personification" in your interpreting tool box.
Register for our morning workshop on interpreting for "Academic Vocabulary" from 9am-12pm and/or our afternoon workshop on "Personification" from 1pm-4pm. Both workshops will be presented by Christopher Rawlings. Please note that lunch WILL NOT be served during the workshop, however, there are plenty of restaurants neat the NEW DCN LOCATION.
